Mission Possible: Milliken Outdoor Learning Space

Purpose

Our mission at EMSCC is to connect community with student success. We believe student learning and social development is enhanced with access to an outdoor space that supports academics, health, social skills, and environmental appreciation. We want to create a space that is inspiring, innovative, and inviting to ALL the families in our neighbourhood.

Project Vision

Build an outdoor learning space with tables, bench seating, shade, and a flat surface for enhanced mobility for the benefit of multiple community members:

  • A safe and welcoming space for students of all ages to access fresh air and sunshine while learning

  • A space that supports social development for division III students (grades 6, 7, and 8), and ongoing social interaction for neighbouring seniors

  • An inviting place for families in the surrounding area who would like to utilize the city park and or playground outside of school operating hours, who may not have access to their own yards due to apartment-style living

Goals

  • Build an outdoor learning space suitable for all ages and abilities

  • Fundraising goal is $45,000, current monies raised as of the date of this post, $14,600

  • 50% of funds to be achieved through grants, corporate and community donations

Timelines

  • Complete the fundraising by June 30, 2018

  • January to April 2018 – gather community input, and

  • Put out RFP’s for design and build

  • Begin construction summer 2018, to be completed by fall 2018
